Joint Nordic evaluation of breeding values
by General Manager, Gert Pedersen Aamand, Nordic Cattle Genetic Evaluation
The first joint Nordic breeding values (EBVs) for fertility traits, type traits, milkability and temperament are published 15. April 2005. At the same time Denmark, Sweden and Finland start presenting their breeding values for all traits on a scale with a joint definition of genetic base and standard deviation.
The company Nordic Cattle Genetic Evaluation (NCGE), which has the responsibility for development and routine genetic evaluation for Finnish, Swedish and Danish dairy cattle, was established 1 January 2002. On 15 April 2005 NCGE publish joint Nordic breeding values for fertility traits, type traits, milk ability and temperament, based on registrations from all three countries. At the same time the presentation of all breeding values for dairy cattle in the three countries are harmonized, concerning definition of genetic base and standard deviation.
In practice you will see the following changes:
- All breeding values are expressed on a cow base – mean 100.
- All breeding values are expressed with a standard deviation of 10 for sires with a complete 1. batch of daughters.
- Breeding values for type and fertility traits are directly comparable and based on registrations from all three countries. The genetic base includes cows from all three countries.
- Sub breeding goals for yield, fertility, body, feet and legs and mammary system are the same in all countries. This harmonization across Denmark, Finland and Sweden will create many changes in EBVs of cows and sires in each country.
